Chariots of fire

1924 Olympics, Eric Liddel and Harold Abrahams. The movie capatures the important moments in these two atheletes life. This is one movie where you root for the characters to win. This movie is both about spirituality and sports. If you are a christian you would be able to relate to the character Eric Liddel a lot.

Liddel is from Scotland a devout christian and Abrahams is a Jew. Both of them love running and they want to prove a point by winning in Olympics. So they practise like hell and make lot of sacrifises to fulfil their dream.

Liddel at one point has to choose between his love for GOD or love for sports.

The moments the atheletes run, their emotions have been captured beautifuly. You feel for them when they lose and you share their joy when they win. Such is the attachment we develop with the characters.

The movie is definitely worth multiple viewings.

I dont have to mention about the movie's soundtrack which is a universal hit.

EURO 2008

IPL is over and it was French open and now its Euro 2008.

For some reason I have never been able to connect with football. Agreed all games has a little bit of luck associated with it. But football is one game which is 99% luck oriented. I have argued with many people regarding this. Yesterday saw the match between Switzeland and Czech the goal made by Czech was not supposed to be a goal at all. In a match which lasted 95 mins there was one goal scored and that too was not supposed to be a goal.

The French open match between Safina and Ivanovic was very good. Safina who dominated many games failed in this one.

World Cup

I can read in media that the whole country has gone crazy over cricket World cup but I remain unaffected. I am still looking for a reason why I am not affected.

There were times in the past when I too got this fever. I am not good with years either so I cant tell you the year of the world cup. But the world cup which kept me more engrossed was the one where there was the More - Miandad clash, where SA was asked to score 22 runs in one ball.

The next WC which took my interest was the one where Aus and Srilanka clashed for the finals, where Kambli cried.

Other than the above two I cant think of any WC that took me by storm. The way media is trying to hype the WC sometimes makes me think its only hype and nothing more but I might be wrong.

Whoever is following the matches - happy viewing.

Those who cant read Tamil dont worry, the above paragraph just talks about my encounter with the Snake Man in the shores of River Thames.

22nd Nov 2006 Hindu has a news about a MTC which ran without control and killed 2 people. One of them a software engineer was in an auto when the auto driver stopped the auto to enquire about an address. Another person is a coolie who had stopped to take rest.

We dont know when disaster strikes. Very pathetic. The way our government values human life is very pathetic. It takes absolutely zero effort to ensure safety in road. Hats off. Rats.

So what is government doing? Yes it now has very strict laws that if a movie has a tamil name there wont be any entertainment tax. Very good job. Ellarum kai thatungapa. It will change Madras as Chennai, Bangalore as Bengaluru, Bombay as Mumbai.

Talking about Cricket I see a lot of smilarities with between India and the west. Yes guy we are comparable to west here. West here is England. Both India and England never wins game on pure talent. They win it by fluke and they talk about that for very long time. India keeps boasting about its world cup victory, we can only pity them.

Running Child

Yesterday there was a documentary in BBC on a Running Child. Yes it was about Budhia Singh from Orissa. I have read about him but yesterday was the first time I saw him in television. As usual BBC started with lot of questions and ended the documentary without answering those questions. The following questions were raised

1) Is it possible for a 4 year old child to run such a distance?
2) Will it harm the child in anyway?
3) Is Biranchi the childs coach and protector trying to cash in on the childs popularity?

None of these questions were answered or in other words answered in both ways.
They showed Budhia Singh running for 72 KMs or 40 miles without taking a break or drink inbetween. He stopped at the 70th KM but entered into Limca book of records.
He does look very fragile. He did look totally exhausted after the long run (I cant imagine myself running 100 mts without getting tired).

There is a chance Budhia may become an olympic hero but the question being raised is should the government allow him to run at this age? There are countries which encourages children to practice for an Olympic which will be 12 years away so what is wrong in allowing Budhia to run?

I am neither a doctor nor a sports man to comment on this but like any other Indian am wishing to see Budhia turn into an icon. If this is done in a planned way with sponsors help we can reserve ourselves an Olympic gold.

Can Budhia sustain his interest, stamina till then is the biggest question.

Football Frenzy

Now all the hoopla about football has come to an end (has it? don’t know still how many are still carrying these matches in their heart – I know many will) yesterday I thought of putting my feelings about this much sort after sport. Well I would like to go one step above that and wanted to write something about sports in general.

The much awaited world cup 2006 was started with much fanfare. Luckily or unluckily since I was in one of those countries which participated in this cup willingly or unwillingly I was made to witness what was happening around me.

The hype for the game started long-time before the competition actually began. Newspapers didn’t have to worry about what to fill because they had loads and loads to write about the game. It was not only about the game it was about the players and their families as well. Cars had their countries flag planted on to the top. Everybody believed that their country is a potential candidate to lift the cup though they were not the favourites. And I assume here it should have been the case in most of the countries which participated.

A small thought on why do people go crazy behind something’s? It makes them forget all their worries till that something is over. That something can be festivals, functions, competitions etc. I remember forgetting all my worries during Christmas, Deepavali or Pongal and eagerly wait for those festivals. Though I will be worrying about the quarterly exams I will be happy because Deepavali was just round the corner. All the worries magically disappear and they return back the next day after the event is over. Same thing when the cricket world cup is played it will remove from us the fear of exams which happens to fall during the same time period as the competition. The excitement of the game will make the exams light. So people want some escape route and these competitions provide them that.

Now coming back to the craze on football if we ask the question If everybody happy with the result? Does everyone agree that Italy is the world champion? Is everyone convinced that Brazil or Germany does not deserve the world cup because their performance was far below Italy or France?

When the Game started Brazil was the hot favourite with Argentina, Italy, Holland and France following very closely but they were also not able to rule out England, Portugal or whatever country was in the list.

During the middle of the competition they never thought France would make it to the semi-finals but it made it to the final.

If we closely look at most of the matches we can find that there were many occasions in which there were shots which didn’t become goals and shots which weren’t meant to be goals became goals. Matches that should have been drawn were won by either of the team because of those shots.

This proves clearly one thing that football is more like playing a game of poker. Unless otherwise the two teams playing have a huge difference in the so called talent, luck decides who wins.

For example if Brazil takes on India (which is still a toddler) then Brazils talent can help it win the game but if Brazil is taking on a team which knows the knacks of football it is obviously luck that determines who wins the game. But the winning team calls itself as the better team and takes all the credit. And supporters wave their flags and support those self proclaimed champions. It looks like we are witnessing WWF.

Take the case of the finals one guy from France missed a penalty shoot out and Italy is declared the champion there was a 50% chance the match would have gone France’s way also till the last kick was done.

All games carry a factor of luck we can’t deny that but not as much as football carries. Take the case of Tennis which gives the players equal chance to prove themselves.

Finally at the end of the match one team is crying and another team is dancing is this what sports was meant to do? Is this why the human race started playing games? If this happens in any other case the person dancing will be called a psycho.

Games which were invented to relax us are now making us cry and take away the relaxation. People become so obsessed with these games. Media makes the most of it by building up the tempo. Competitions may be necessary to bring out the talent but winning the competition shouldn’t be glorified to such an extent that the spirit of brotherhood is lost.

Look at what Zidane did in his last match. What makes him do that? Is this what we want to bring out of the people who play games?

The guy who missed the goal during the penalty shoot out will carry it in his heart to the grave because the world we live in made that so important in his eyes. But come on it’s just a game and that too football.

The Nun - Movie

Yes the demon in Nun costume looks scary. Even in one of the earlier movies when they show this painting it had good impact. But beyond that...
