Thuppaki
I was never a big fan of AR Murugadoss. I found Ghajini to be a cheap imitation of Memento and I did not get a chance to see Ramana. I never had the urge to watch 7 am arivu.
After Villu and Sura I try to stay away from Vijay's movie as much as possible.
Now Thuppaki is combination of the above two and so obviously I never had any intention of seeing this movie. Finally after reading some positive reviews I thought of taking the risk of watching this movie and the result was I was pleasently surprised. The movie was not bad at all. It was indeed neatly packaged.
Though the story is the same Vijayakanth type story it has been executed differently. We do find many of the cinematic cliches such as villain never finishing of the hero even when he has him at gun point. Vijay looks stylish and we can see he has started underplaying for the past couple of movies and it works for him. There are no over the top punch dialogues. The major let down are the songs. I felt they could have been a lot better.
Another major problem I had was watching this movie in Mayajaal. I got tickets for the second row from the screen and it was very uncomfortable to sit at that position and watch the movie. I had to come out with a pain in the neck.

Rowthiram

Vijay TV Awards
Vijay TV Awards is one of the most hopeless awards I have seen. They come up with innovative ways to give awards to everyone. They name awards like Best Entertainer, Best Villain, Most Favorite Actor etc when there should be only one award Best Actor. The best part is some people say proudly that their idol has won Vijay TV awards. During the days before the actual awards show they run a series where eminent!! people discuss on the nominations. They will talk as if they are the doyens of Indian cinema. Its pathetic.

More Movies
Watched couple of movies over the week. Revisted The straight story and its cinematography charmed me the same way it charmed me years ago. The soundtrack is something I m searching for ..
My Sassy Girl After reading about this movie on the net I waited patiently to get hold of the Korean version. The movie begining gives you away that you can expect some sentimental ending. Then the movie goes on for another 1 hr in a very light way. It was good to see the streets of Korea, its subways everything reminds of the fact there are people far away living life the same way we do. Two strangers meet and the girl is of dominant type. The movie reminded me in someway of 500 days of summer as they fall in and out of love. Finally the movie takes the sentimental route and has a feel good ending. I read that this is based on the true story and the true story doesnt end the same way this movie ends.

Serpico was another movie which I watched and the movie is about corruption within the police department and its based on true story. This movie is about Ambi of shankar and what he has to go through for being honest. The movie is not cinematic is more realistic. We can almost feel for Serpico. this movie reminded me of Taxi Driver to some extent. At the end of the day its a futile battle against corruption.

Enthiran - Robot

The wait was long 2 yrs during its making and 10 days after its release. Finally saw Enthiran at Devi at mount road.
It's always a pleasure to wait for a Rajni movie. Reading so many news that comes out during its making and looking at the occasional stills that come out always increases the expectations for the movie. That too when Shankar joins hands with Rajni then the expectations double.
Coming to the theater I know Devi has one of the worst enterance for a theater and expected chaos but hoped there will be better traffic management but as expected it was horrible. To park your vehicle you nees special skillset. After parking got the tickets and there was a queue to enter into the cinema hall.
The hall was huge and the airconditioning was great and it looked pretty good. The theater was full.
Now all set and I started to enjoy the final moments before watching the most expected movie.
The movie opens up with Sun picture logo and Kalanithi Maran name. Then comes the much awaited Superstar logo which has been changed and it looks good but the background score doesnt have same effect.
The movie doesnt waste time and goes straight to the point and we see Rajni minus usual intro. From then on Shankar doesnt waste any moment he just tries to explain the concept of Robot in layman's terms and he succeeds to a large extent and the audiences are'nt bored either.
There are couple of scenes especially the romance scenes between Rajni and Aiswarya which stands out without any link to the story. They jus act as starters for songs.
Rajni as the scientist just hangs around in the first half but Chitti steals the show. Shankar sets the base for second half very well. The first half is breezy.
The second half also starts off well and ends well with some awesome graphics never seen even before.
Music is a total let down atleast in first viewing the music did not stand out as expected. Songs were hopeless comparatively Sivaji song picturisation was very good. Though Rajni and Aiswarya look great in the songs the choreography was not there at all. Rajni doesnt do any steps he just walks, smiles and gives the usual pose. So none of the songs had that energy. Kilimanjaro was colourful and Arima was slightly better of the lot.
Rajni for some reason doesnt show much action he mostly relies on his charisma. Though as villain Robot he is awesome he is not in his usual elements and the story also doesnt give scope for any Rajnisms. The chitti dance was awesome though we know it must be someone else behind the Rajni mask it was just awesome. In Sivaji Shankar showed us what if Rajni was was white, here Shankar shows what if Michale Jackson had the looks of Rajni. Similarly the train fight scene was awesome. I could see Rajni has become a bit lean especially in the initial scientist role he looks very lean. The scientist Rajni for some reason reminded me of Jhonny barber Rajni.
The graphics at the end is just awesome I was afraid that there might look amatuerish but it was thoroughly professional.
Aiswarya rai looks good in most of the scenes sometimes her age can be seen.
The movie is totaly a directors movie that is Shankars movie and Rajni occupies the movie from start to end. There is no scope for anyone else. As a director Shankar has excelled. Though the movie has a classy look during scenes set indoor the outdoor scenes gives the movie a local look with hopeless Indian police chase, Petrol tanker lorry etc.
At some places the dialogue was just hopeless especially when the scientist Rajni scolds the Robot. He uses pakka local words like Poriki, Maramandai etc. If Kamal had played the role I m not sure he would have uttered the same dialgoues. Otherwise the dialgoues were good. I enjoyed the arguments between Chitti and Vaseegaran. There are many quality dialogues which we have never seen before in Rajni movies. For the first time I saw Rajni uttering Kavidhai on screen. Also he uses lot of English words and complicated Tamil words too. These were first time seen in Rajni movie.
After long time Rajni's movie makes us emotional in many scenes.
Though we have seen many english movies this movie has not borrowed any scenes may be Terminator part 1.
Overall its a different Rajni movie its also different Tamil movie. Though everything was good about the movie it just didnt make me go ga ga (The last scenes did make me go gaga). Even Avatar didnt do it for me. I might watch it once more and there have been times when I have loved movies only during second viewing. As a Shankar movie, the movie rocks but as a Rajni movie I expected fireworks from Rajni which I didnt get though I could occasionally see the sparks in Villain Robot's performance.

What Dreams May Come

I started watching this movie a week back with lot of expectations. My expectations was for a heart warming story but 30 minutes into the movie I felt the movie was too surreal for me and I couldn't understand what was happening. I switched it off.
Now today I thought I will give it one more try and found the movie to be pretty interesting. The first half does wander without any meaning and the way the story moves to past and present does irritate initially. But once we get into the story it gets very interesting.
Visually I can say I have never seen a movie like this. We can even compare it to Avatar. Awesome settings.
The plot is about a highly debatable topic of life after death. They set their own rules and play by that. The movie doesn't get spiritual at any point of time. Robin Williams as usual fits into the role easily as it is about a loser who realizes what he could have done better but only after his death.
Towards the end I felt a sad ending must have made a great impact than the current one they have.
Initially when you see death after death it could be a turn off but dont give up as the plot gets interesting in the second half.

Kramer Vs Kramer
I did watch couple of movies but none of them which actually impressed me. But this one Kramer Vs Kramer what a movie.
The movie starts off at a point which will most probably come only during intermission in Indian Cinema.
It beautiful captures the relationship between the father and a son.
The kid has given a awesome performance.
First time I saw a young Meryl Streep and was totally blown over by her beauty. She looks absolutely fabulous.
Its Dustin Hoffman show all the way.

The movie though takes a heavy plot we never feel we are watching a movie with heavy plot. The scenes move on effortlessly. We forget ourselves and start enjoying the father-son relation. Towards the end the movie tends to get a bit touchy and most of us will be able to judge the ending.
For those who are looking for something more there is also a frontal nude scene of a woman ;)

Ravanan

The Mist

The trailer, friends recommendation and ofcourse the director and author combo made me desperate to watch this movie. Was the movie as good as The Shawshank Redemption or The Green Mile? A pretty straightforward answer is no. This movie is not in the same league as the other two.
What I liked in The Mist?
1) As a horror fan I loved the theme. An entire town (who knows what happened outside the town) gets covered by a mist. This movie just concentrates on a group of people who gets trapped in a shop.
2) The movie definitely has some eerie moments and the creatures (except for the first one with tentacles) do look good and generate some scare.
3) If you ask me to list the best scene in the movie its definitely the huge monster which walks with a haunting bellow towards the end of the movie.
4) The climax was not something which I expected, it was kind of a twist but it was kind of not kind of a jolt.
What I didnt like in The Mist?
1) Cliched characters. We have been used to so many horror movies that the characters in these movies also fit to those horror movie template. A guy who doesnt believe in what people who actually saw the monsters say. People who dont listen to people asking them not to venture outside and end up getting killed.
2) The christian character was a bit over the top.
3) The mob hysteria was kind of haste.
4) The good people are overtly sympathetic towards the kid which kind of makes it annoying to watch.
Overall if you are a horror fan you will like this movie but will it be at the top of our list is the question?

Chungking Express

This is one movie which will leave a smile on your face. I bought this movie not because for the director Kar Wai Wong because I didnt know much about him. I bought this movie after I watched "In the mood for love" by the same director which I bought accidentaly. When checking out "In the mood for love" in imdb I came across ChungKing express and went ahead and bought it.
Since I didnt read through the story I was expecting some kind of surreal movie with which I might find difficult to associate. But I was in for a pleasent surprise. The movie has a very simple plot which I was able to appreciate.
I was not very happy with the movie In the mood for love but still it was a good movie with a nice soundtrack. In ChungKing the director takes a humoristic approach and it is very light and interesting.
The movie has two love stories and the second one is longer than the first one. The first one is about love between a lonely cop who was dumped by his girlfriend and a ruthless drug dealer. Only negative about this part is it ends abruptly.

The second one is also about love between a lonely cop who was dumped by his girlfriend and a waitress. This story is a bit more interesting than the first one. Especially the actors Tony Leung and Faye Wong were excellent. We dont see the lead actors conveying the love as any other movie but it is shown in a different way. The ending will leave you with a smile on your face.
In imdb I could see some set of people didnt like the movie because there was absolutely no plot or anything in it. But thats what makes in interesting. The situations is what makes this movie more interesting.
If you like soft romance then go ahead and get a copy.

Random Movies

Last week I got the opportunity to watch some movies which we categorise as non commercial in Lumiere TV. These movies had featured sometime in the past in the Cannes Festival.
It started with an Italian movie The Sons Room. There's a family of four. The father, mother and their son and daughter. The son dies in a freak accident and the family has to live through the thoughts of him. How they cope up with it was brought very beautifully. They come to know that their son had a girl friend and she helps them to overcome the grief.
The next movie was an English movie Garage made in Ireland. The movie was categorised as urban alienation. The movie is about a guy who works in a local Garage and struggles mingle with the society. The society makes fun of him though he is harmless. Finally he finds a friend in a teenager but the society again thinks wrong of him and he is made to take a very sad decision. The movie has some very beautiful and haunting locations.
The last movie was a movie made in Iraq called Kilometer Zero. I didnt watch the full movie but from what I saw it was again well made. Its about the conflict between Arabs and the Kurds. Its a road movie and has some fantastic desert cinematography.
All the above movies were slow paced, beautifully filmed and very engaging plots. Though the movies are set in totaly different cultures we can easily relate to the characters.

Paranormal Activity

Do you know what happens inside our house when everyone goes to sleep? Are we the only people living in our house? Is there something staring at us all through the night? Whats that creaking sound that we hear in the kitchen when we are in our bed? Is it just the wood expanding or something else comes out of the deep and prances inside our house?
If you are someone who lies in bed afraid to close eyes because of the "someone is watching me" syndrome then this movie is definitely for you. If you liked Blair witch you will love this as well.

National Awards
Looks like National Award for Indian movies has been announced and when we read names of some people and some movies which has been chosen for the awards, we can understand how the process and mindset of the jury would have been.
Especially in bollywood they have created infinite number of awards such as Filmfare award, star dust award, abc award and xyz award. Inside each of these awards they have categories like Most popular movie, Best movie, Most entertaining actor, Best actor, People's choice etc etc. Finally almost all the movie would have got atleast one award.
Vaaranam Aaiyram has been chosen as the best tamil film and Priyanka Chopra is the best actress. We dont have to add anything more the talk about these awards. Even oscar awards are not awarded to the right movies/actors sometimes so we can't blame awards in our country which is quite famous for you know what.

Two Things
First Thing
Today there was a news about a Martui Omni ramming into a Govt bus and 10 people in the Omni died and one is critical. Now I dont want to be insensitive to the family which is already going through a nightmare but this incident (not accident) only raises question about the safety standards of our country. Is an Omni designed to carry 11 people?
Traffic police are only bystanders in our contry. Though they have all the power in their hands they are only ready to misuse it rather than use it. There might be people who will be violating the rule right under their nose who will go scot free but a person who violates rule in a empty road will be caught and fined. The sanctity of the rule is lost here.
As mentioned in my previous post, the death angels Black Taxis try to overtake from the left where there is only gap for a cycle to go and make you go to the extreme right closely followed by his retarded companion a Sumo. All these idiots who think through their ass are aged not more than 17 to 23.
A sense of fear should be instilled in these retards minds, a simple violation should be charged with the maximu fine and the rule should be ruthlessly followed. In India only fear works and that too only for a minimal %.
Unless this is done valuable lives will be lot everyday. The act of me surviving this chaos can only be termed as Miracle and nothing else. I know this is my umpteenth post on traffic and another ton will follow. I cant help it.
Second thing
Our broadcasting ministry is thinking of coming up with some new rule of giving copyright ownership to the creator as well. Till now the copyright is owned by the producer and not the director. If the new rule comes in then the director will also own the copyright.
Is this a right decision? On first look it might look it is right but there are so many questions in it. In software scenario the code which is created by a dveloper is owned by the client who pays for it. If the new rule is applied there who will own the code? People might say developer should own it but what about the designer? the tester? the planner?
Similarly in Cine industry too there are so many areas such as Choreography, Cinematography, Stroy, Screenplay, Fight etc now if copyright is given only to Director does it satisfy the need?
Knowing about indian think tanks who never think before they act, they might soon implement this and create a mess.
For me the existing rule of the guy who paid for the whole thing owns the right makes sense. The rule can be relaxed only for whoever is working on profit sharing mode than salary mode. Then again it cannot be blindly implemented.

Dawn of the Dead - 2004
Just happened to watch the remake of the classic Romero's Dawn of the Dead. Trust me there are very few remakes that can better the original and Dawn of the Dead by Zack Snyder is definitley one. One reason is its not a scene by scene remake. Snyder has just taken the plot and built on it.
One important change is the way the Zombies move. They no more move slowly. They dont give you the chance to escape. This makes the movie even more gripping. There are more characters than the original. You even see a Zombie giving birth.
The scene where the zombies block their escape in their custom made vechile has been picturised in a gripping manner. Believe me there are some very gory scenes with a chain saw.
Here is the trailer of the movie. Where there is no room in Hell, The Dead will walk the Earth.

Masala Mix

Dasavatharam vs Sivaji
Now coming to the comparison Sivaji did not meet expectations. On first viewing I even felt what was shankar doing for the 2 years? On the whole much was expected from Rajini - Shankar- ARR Combo but the movie didnt meet the expectations.

Coming to Dasavatharan first thing its not a very intelligent movie as portrayed by some groups. Its a very ordinary chase movie. This could have been accomplished on a much lesser scale but Kamal chose the grander, painful and longer route. There is nothing in the movie to say Dasavatharam surpassed Sivaji in intelligence. It cannot be said Kamal took Indian cinema to a different plane. Dasavatharam, like Sivaji is another half baked attempt. If not for the 10 roles hype it would have been a disaster.
One thing common between the movies is that both the movies had only commercial results in mind. Though they tried to entertain us in achieving those commercial goals they only succeeded partly. They were not highly satisfying attempts.
Dasavatharam not living upto expectations is tolerable to some extent because it had only Kamal's name to it and he has tried his best. But in case of Sivaji its a lot of talent which has been wasted like Rajini, Shankar, ARR, Sujatha.
Sincerley wish Endhiran - The Robot will not be another quarter baked attempt.

Apocalypse now

The first scene itself tells you what to expect, which is a surreal movie. The captain then goes on a long journey to meet the top guy through a river. The things he encounters on the way and the final meet with the top guy itself forms the crux of the movie.
We are taken through some stunning visuals. Helicopters has never been used as it is used in this movie. We can also see how this movie has set some high standard for war movies.
The movie is not based on true incidents rather it is based on a novel, the theme of which has been changed totally for this movie.
Marlon Brando has very little screen space but since the entire movie is based on the waiting for his arrival he becomes very important for the movie. Martin Sheen is the star of the movie. The movie during the later half becomes very confusing like The Beach. The characters just go on and on with some philosophy which I was not intelligent enough to understand.
The last scene is very violent if you dont have the stomach for extreme scenes it will be difficult for you to sit through it.
